Seemingly every week since Trump took office, the public has learned of new, circumstantially damning evidence indicating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Many in Trump’s inner circle, including Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr., have found themselves at the center of rampant speculation over what ties they may have had with the Russian government during the 2016 presidential campaign. This speculation increased substantially when Donald Trump abruptly fired James Comey, the FBI Director investigating such ties.
Now, Robert Mueller, the Special Counsel appointed to investigate the connection between the Trump team and Russia, has reportedly found enough evidence to take the investigation one step closer to indictment. According to the Wall Street Journal, Mueller “has impaneled a grand jury in Washington to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections, a sign that his inquiry is growing in intensity and entering a new phase.”
“Grand juries are powerful investigative tools that allow prosecutors to subpoena documents, put witnesses under oath and seek indictments, if there is evidence of a crime. Legal experts said that the decision by Mr. Mueller to impanel a grand jury suggests he believes he will need to subpoena records and take testimony from witnesses.”
Tomorrow, Restore Progress’s legal expert will provide an overview of the grand jury process, and what is likely to happen next as the investigation continues.
