In a contentious town hall meeting earlier this week, Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) argued that because he’s rich, taxpayers don’t pay his salary. That statement is of course patently false, and is yet another example of Republican “leadership” failing to understand the basic principles of the way our government works.
In video footage from the event, Mullin is seen angrily saying to his taxpaying constituents:
“You say you pay for me to do this? That’s bullcrap,”
“I pay for myself. I paid enough taxes before I got here and continue to through my company to pay my own salary. This is a service. No one here pays me to go.”
WRONG. One hundred percent of every congress member’s salary is paid for by taxpayers. Rep. Mullin’s demeaning response is an insult to every hardworking American, and serves as a potent reminder of why we need massive Democratic voter turnout in 2018.
