As reported by Restore Progress, Sean Spicer got himself into some hot water last week when he claimed that Adolf Hitler never used chemical weapons, despite Hitler having murdered millions by methods including chemical means. Spicer made the comments following US missile strikes against Syria, in an apparent effort to cast Syrian Bashar al Assad as a crueler, lower leader than Hitler. Spicer has since apologized.
Following Spicer’s lead, a North Carolina Republican has made an even more outrageous comparison to Hitler. In a Facebook post, state representative Larry Pittman commented that President Abraham Lincoln was a “tyrant” akin to Germany’s Adolf Hitler. As reported by the Raleigh News & Observer:
“Pittman was responding to commenters on his campaign Facebook page who were criticizing his bill that would have directed state government to defy a U.S. Supreme Court ruling and restore the state constitution’s ban on same-sex marriage. House Speaker Tim Moore said Wednesday that the bill is dead and won’t get a hearing….[When] a commenter reminded Pittman that the Supreme Court ruling settled the law on gay marriage and that the lawmaker should ‘get over it.'”
“Pittman’s response: ‘And if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort (of) tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional.”
That a state lawmaker is comparing Abraham Lincoln, arguably America’s greatest president, to Adolf Hitler is an unfortunate sign of the times we now live in. Shame on Larry Pittman. Hopefully the people of North Carolina will respond appropriately.
