Last month, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget released its budget for 2018, dubbed “America First: A Budget Blueprint to Make America Great Again.” Apparently, having an educated population is not a part of Donald Trump’s grand plan to “MAGA” – his budget proposes a 13% cut to the department of education, meaning 9 billion fewer dollars will go towards preparing American children for the jobs of the 21st century.
Somehow (we know how), the person responsible for overseeing the department as it navigates these draconian cuts is billionairess Betsy DeVos. As has been reported here and elsewhere, DeVos is utterly unqualified for the position, having no experience in public education, and, as was made abundantly clear during her confirmation hearings, she lacks an understanding of the most basic issues facing the department and the system it supports.
Now, we learn that DeVos is personally responsible for draining the department’s budget even further – to the tune of $1,000,000 per month. DeVos apparently is requiring a seven-figure per month security detail – an unheard of expense for a cabinet-level official, especially in the typically lower profile department of education. As reported by NBCNews, “The U.S Marshals Service is providing unprecedented protective detail to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and the added security will be costing her agency almost $1 million per month, the marshals service said Friday.”
“No other cabinet-level official is being guarded by federal marshals and the last time that happened was in 2009 for the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy…the Marshals Service is hiring nearly two dozen people specifically to guard DeVos.”
To summarize: Trump has proposed devastating cuts to the department of education. Of the funds still remaining within the department, $12,000,000 per year are now devoted to the personal security of billionairess Betsy Devos, a woman uniquely and embarrassingly unqualified to serve as the department’s secretary. During her confirmation hearings, DeVos did not dispute claims that her family has given about $200,000,000 to republicans over the years. We humbly suggest that she can afford her own security. We also suggest that her next $200,000,000 giveaway should go toward helping American school children, instead of buying herself a government job.
