In the wake of his humiliating health care defeat this week, Trump issued a statement indicating support for House speaker Paul Ryan. This was surprising to many, as Paul Ryan was responsible for shepherding Trumpcare through the Republican controlled House of Representatives – a task he failed at, spectacularly.
It seems Trump’s “magnanimous” attitude toward Ryan was short lived. In a series of Tweets on Saturday, Trump first told his followers that he looks forward to the failure of the Affordable Care Act, and the resulting political advantage he believes it would afford him (never mind the fact that the failure of the ACA would wreak devastation upon millions of Americans who depend on the ACA). He then directed his followers to watch the Fox News program hosted by Judge Jeanne Pirro on Saturday night.
What important message did Jeanne Pirro have for her viewers? A demand that Paul Ryan resign. As reported by Politico:
“Trump…tweeted Saturday morning to watch Judge Jeanine Pirro’s show on Fox News on Saturday night.”
“Pirro began her show by calling on Ryan to step down, casting blame on the speaker for not being able to the pass the health care legislation. In a lengthy monologue, Pirro also took aim at White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, alongside absolving Trump from much of any blame for the saga.”
Seems the uneasy relationship between Ryan and Trump is on the rocks. In the days and weeks ahead, it will be fascinating to watch members of the fracturing Republican party pick sides.
