As the 2016 campaign progressed, and Donald Trump’s misogyny was laid bare for the world to see, many looked to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka, as a potential source of positive influence. Unfortunately, two months into Trump’s presidency, we have seen precisely zero evidence that Ivanka has any desire to exert a moderating influence on her father.
Now, outlets are reporting that Ivanka has secured herself an office in the White House. Not surprisingly, exactly what she will be doing for the Trump administration has not been disclosed, but reports indicate that she is in the process of obtaining a security clearance. Her nepotistic appointment appears to conflict directly with an earlier promise made by Ivanka that she would not have a formal role in her father’s White House.
As reported by Politico, “Ivanka Trump, who moved to Washington saying she would play no formal role in her father’s administration, is now officially setting up shop in the White House.”
“The powerful first daughter has secured her own office on the West Wing’s second floor — a space next to senior adviser Dina Powell, who was recently promoted to a position on the National Security Council. She is also in the process of obtaining a security clearance and is set to receive government-issued communications devices this week.”
As with Donald himself, Ivanka’s placement in the White House raises a whole host of conflicts of interest issues and ethical concerns. Ivanka currently runs a Chinese-made women’s apparel business – a business that was disgracefully promoted by Kellyanne Conway in violation of federal ethics rules. The White House has declined to address how these conflicts of interests will be resolved.
