FBI director James Comey has ignored repeated congressional demands for information regarding Donald Trump’s unsupported wiretapping accusations against former president Barrack Obama. Now, it appears that even Senate Republicans have had enough.
As reported by CNN, “Sen. Lindsey Graham said Wednesday he’ll subpoena information from the FBI over President Donald Trump’s wiretapping allegations if bureau Director James Comey does not provide information about whether there is any validity to the President’s claims.”
Said Graham, in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo: “We wrote a letter — Sen. Whitehouse and myself — wanting to know if there’s evidence of a warrant issued by the Trump campaign. He hasn’t answered that letter or confirmed if there’s a real investigation of the Trump campaign.”
Republican Senator Charles Grassley, who thus far has been a dutiful supplicant to Trump’s and his agenda, is also furious at Comey. According to the Washington Post, Grassley literally screamed the following, when asked about the silence of Comey and the Justice Department:
“It doesn’t matter whether you have a Republican or Democrat president, every time they come up here for their nomination hearing . . . I ask them, ‘Are you going to answer phone calls and our letters, and are you going to give us the documents we want?’ And every time we get a real positive ‘yes’! And then they end up being liars! It’s not if they’re treating us differently than another committee. It’s if they’re responding at all.”
Comey’s unwillingness to appear before Congress begs the question: what is he afraid of? Comey’s behavior continues to undermine the public’s faith in the neutrality and independence of the FBI. For the good of this country and the institution he serves, Comey should resign immediately.
