Trump has broken so many campaign promises it is impossible to keep up. There was his promise to “drain the swamp” …which promptly gave way to his appointment of billionaire Republican donors to lead federal agencies. There was his promise that no one would lose their health care under his ACA repeal and replacement bill…a bill that, according to fact-checkers, would actually strip 10-15 million Americans of their health care coverage. Then there was his famous claim that he would build a wall along the Mexican border and make Mexico pay for it…which was immediately and forcefully rejected as a fantasy by the Mexican government.
Now, NBC News is reporting that Trump appears to be considering reneging on an extremely simple promise – one that a self-described billionaire would have no trouble honoring: namely, his promise to donate his presidential salary to charity.
As reported by NBC News, “President Donald Trump pledged to forego a presidential salary, but as his second payday approaches, the White House is declining to say if the president has donated any of his earnings yet.”
NBC notes that during Trump’s campaign, and continuing into his presidency, Trump has repeatedly promised to donate his salary either to the Treasury or to charity. For example, Trump appeared on “60 Minutes” in November, stating in no uncertain terms that, “I’m not going to the take the salary.”
We should note that because Trump has refused to release his tax returns, it is possible that Trump is actually not a billionaire as he claims, and that he needs the money to pay off his many foreign debts. Pretty much any other reason is wholly unacceptable. We will continue to update this story as it develops.
