The congressional budget office on Monday released its long anticipated analysis of the likely impact of Trumpcare on the American health care system. To summarize: Trumpcare would strip health insurance away from approximately 24 million people. A significant portion of these 24 million would be the elderly, whose Medicare benefits would be slashed under the Republican plan.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a long time defender of Medicare and a proponent of a single-payer health insurance system, was outraged. Giving his assessment of Trumpcare, Sanders did not mince words, slamming the Republican plan as “disgusting” and “immoral,” and predicting that “thousands of Americans will die” if Trumpcare becomes law, reports Politico.
Stated Sen. Sanders: “That’s what this legislation is about. And it must be defeated. I hope there is enough sense among some of the Republicans to vote against it.”
Sanders’s sentiments were echoed by Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, who had this to say, according to the Washington Post, “The CBO score shows just how empty the president’s promises, that everyone will be covered and costs will go down, have been. This should be a looming stop sign for the Republicans’ repeal effort.”
Despite the “stop sign”, Republican lawmakers, led by Donald Trump and Paul Ryan, are pushing full speed ahead to try to force Trumpcare through Congress. Their zeal to take away affordable health care from 24 million Americans is, truly, something to behold.
