28-year-old James McDaniel created a fake news website designed to test just how gullible Trump supporters really are. The concept behind his site was that by publishing stories so outrageous and lacking in any evidence, Trump supporters would openly reject and refute them. To his shock, the opposite happened.
Over a million page views and hundreds of thousands of social media shares later, he’s discovered that there’s seemingly nothing too outrageous, conspiratorial or downright crazy for them to believe. Daniels says:
“To my surprise, the Trump masses embraced my stories as fact, almost universally. It seemed that there wasn’t anything I could write that was too wild or outrageous to be believed by this particular audience… If I wrote about a black liberal or Obama supposedly saying something controversial, the response was unbridled racism and hatred. When I wrote about Hillary Clinton’s new emails that proved she was a child sacrificing maniac, people screamed for her head.”
Many of his most popular articles on his fake news site focused on former Pres. Barack Obama. Here are some highlights:*
- Obama is plotting a coup from a secret bunker
- Obama plays golf with Vladimir Putin
- Obama is organizing a refugee army in Mexico
- Obama ran a pedophile ring out of the White House
- British singer Adele thinks Obama should be in jail
*Editors note: If you or someone you know believes any of these things, please seek medical attention immediately.
While no sane person could possibly take McDaniel’s material seriously, the site’s popularity with Trump supporters should be. Thankfully, McDaniel has stopped his experiment. One can only hope that Breitbart and Fox will follow suit.
