Donald Trump’s struggles to fund his “signature” wall have been well documented. First, as just about everyone predicted, Mexico stated in no uncertain terms that it would not pay for the wall. Rebuffed by Mexico, Trump then looked to available funds at the department of homeland security…where he found funds accounting for approximately 1/1000th of the cost of the total cost.
Facing this reality, the Trump administration is now looking to take funds from vital national security programs, including airport safety and Coast Guard funding. As reported by the Washington Post, “The Trump administration, searching for money to build the president’s planned multibillion-dollar border wall and crack down on illegal immigration, is weighing significant cuts to the Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration and other agencies focused on national security threats, according to a draft plan.”
“The Coast Guard’s $9.1 billion budget in 2017 would be cut 14 percent to about $7.8 billion, while the TSA and FEMA budgets would be reduced about 11 percent each to $4.5 billion and $3.6 billion, respectively.”
The Post notes that the TSA programs that Trump is looking to cut “have been considered a vital piece of airport security and for preventing a repetition of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackings after planes are aloft.”
Trump’s ridiculous wall has gone from being a joke, to a boondoggle, to now, possibly, a national security disaster. Responsible members of Congress need to put a stop to this nonsense.
