During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mike Pence was one of Donald Trump’s most vocal surrogates, serving as attack dog for Donald at rallies and fundraisers around the country. Pence, like Trump, repeatedly blasted Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server while Clinton worked for the government. Indeed, Pence stooped so low as to insinuate that Hillary’s use of the server somehow led to the execution of an Iranian scientist – a despicable claim with no basis in fact that was quickly debunked.
Turns out Pence’s criticisms were hugely hypocritical. As reported by the Indianapolis Star, Vice President Mike Pence “routinely used a private email account to conduct public business as governor of Indiana, at times discussing sensitive matters and homeland security issues.”
“Emails released to IndyStar in response to a public records request show Pence communicated via his personal AOL account with top advisers on topics ranging from security gates at the governor’s residence to the state’s response to terror attacks across the globe. In one email, Pence’s top state homeland security adviser relayed an update from the FBI regarding the arrests of several men on federal terror-related charges.”
The report goes on to provide that Pence’s personal email system was actually hacked, meaning he exposed government information to theft and possibly foreign intercept. Nothing of the sort happened with Hillary Clinton’s emails which, though they were on a privately maintained server, were never breached by hackers.
That a Republican in Trump’s White House is a hypocrite is not all that surprising. However, this particular instance is nonetheless infuriating, given Pence’s antics and histrionics on the campaign trail.
