As anyone not living under a rock knows, one of Donald Trump’s most popular (and preposterous) promises during his presidential campaign was that, as president, Trump would build a wall on along the Mexican border, and have Mexico pay for it(!). Now that he has won the White House, Trump is learning what all serious people have known all along – his wall is a big, dumb, and extremely expensive fantasy that will certainly NOT be paid for by Mexico.
Nevertheless, the Trump White House has been moving forward with plans for a border wall, believing, until recently, that existing federal funds would be sufficient to get the almost $22 billion project off the ground. Now, to its dismay, the White House has discovered that the existing funds are, shall we say, just a tiny bit insufficient. As reported by Reuters:
“President Trump’s promise to use existing funds to begin immediate construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border has hit a financial roadblock.”
“The rapid start of construction, promised throughout Trump’s campaign and in an executive order issued in January on border security, was to be financed, according to the White House, with ‘existing funds and resources’ of the Department of Homeland Security. But so far, the DHS has identified only $20 million that can be re-directed to the multi-billion-dollar project.” (emphasis added)
You do the math: Trump has thus far secured about 0.10% of the funding required to build his ridiculous wall. Mexico has made it abundantly clear that it will not, under any circumstances, pay for the wall – thus puncturing the fairy tale Trump had promised to his voters. So, it looks as though Trump will be asking the American people to come out of pocket for the $21,980,000,000.00 shortfall. Making America Great Again, one boondoggle at a time!
