It was one of Donald Trump’s most famous campaign promises: “we are going to build a wall, and Mexico is going to pay for it!” Any serious person knew that this promise was likely a ridiculous fantasy. Now, the fantasy is exposed: American taxpayers, not Mexico will be paying for Trump’s wall.
After Trump reiterated his claim that Mexico would pay for the wall on national television this week, Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto cancelled a planned visit to America, and stated unequivocally that Mexico would not be paying for the wall.
So, congressional Republicans will use American taxpayer funding for the project. Reports ABC News, “House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said [on Thursday] that Congress will forge ahead with plans to approve funds for President Donald Trump‘s border wall, which they estimate will cost $12 billion to $15 billion.”
Trump has floated the idea that Mexican imports will be taxed 20%, as a means to recoup taxpayer money. Of course, this would likely only increase prices charged for Mexican goods, meaning that not only would Americans have to pay for the wall, they would also pay higher prices on Mexican goods.
