When video emerged in the run up to the 2016 election featuring Donald Trump bragging that he can just “grab [women] by the p&*^y,” the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard interviewed Sessions, and asked him whether Trump’s disgusting behavior constitutes sexual assault. The relevant interview excerpt is as follows:
The Weekly Standard: But beyond [Trump’s] language, would you characterize the behavior described in [the video] as sexual assault if that behavior actually took place?
SESSIONS: I don’t characterize that as sexual assault. I think that’s a stretch. I don’t know what he meant—
The Weekly Standard So if you grab a woman by the genitals, that’s not sexual assault?
SESSIONS: I don’t know. It’s not clear that he—how that would occur.
At his confirmation hearing this week, Sessions walked back his statement, saying that if a woman’s genitalia were grabbed without her permission, it would be sexual assault. Wow! Courageous statement, Jeff Sessions.
