Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly, who has built his career lecturing Americans about the sanctity of “family values,” is in the news yet again for sexual improprieties. Reports the New York Times, Fox News secretly settled a sexual harassment claim brought against O’Reilly in 2011 by a former Fox News employee.
As recounted by the Times, this is far from O’Reilly’s first alleged offence: “Mr. O’Reilly [has] run into problems before. In 2004, a producer on his show…sued him, asserting that he had made unwanted sexual advances and lewd comments in a series of phone calls and dinner conversations. According to the suit, Mr. O’Reilly told her on multiple occasions to buy a vibrator, called her when it sounded like he was masturbating and described various sexual fantasies…After two weeks of sensational headlines in New York’s tabloid newspapers, Mr. O’Reilly settled for millions of dollars…”
Fox’s payout to O’Reilly’s alleged victims is similar to a more recent episode involving Roger Ailes, former Fox News chairman. In late 2016, Fox was forced to fire Ailes after former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson publicly accused him of sexual harassment. Fox reportedly had to pay Carlson $20 million as a settlement, in addition to a generous $40 million severance to Ailes. Ailes has since assumed a close relationship with President-elect Trump.
Seems you have a problem, Fox News.
