As you may remember, during a 2012 republican primary debate, Rick Perry announced to viewers that he would, if elected president, eliminate three federal agencies. In one of the most embarrassing moments in presidential debate history, Perry was unable to remember the three agencies he planned to disband. He withdrew from the race shortly thereafter, in disgrace.
As it turns out, one of the agencies he intended to eliminate was the Department of Energy. Perhaps it comes as no surprise, then, that Perry is reported to be Trump’s top choice to head the Department.
The Department of Energy oversees the nation’s energy needs and is the federal department responsible for handling nuclear material. Recent Department heads have been scientists with a deep understanding of nuclear energy. Perry, to put it mildly, has no such experience.
Should Perry be appointed, we can only hope that he will be able to handle the demands of the job. There will likely be more than three of them.
