Vice President Joe Biden made a game changing announcement on Monday to a group of supporters:
“Yeah, I am. I am going to run in 2020. For president. And also, you know so, what the hell man, anyway.”
His announcement marks a stunning reversal from the decision Biden made in October 2015, when he formally announced that he would not run for president in 2016. At the time, he said that the window had closed on “mounting a realistic campaign for president.”
On further questioning, Biden conceded that events might intervene to change his mind. “I learned a long time ago, fate has a strange way of intervening,” he said. But Biden’s willingness to throw his hat in the ring at such an early date underscores just how important beating Trump in 2020 will be to Democrats, and to restoring the progress Biden and President Obama have brought to America.
